Do Not Spray List! http://polka.esolves.com/2007/05/do-not-spray-list/ http://polka.esolves.com/2007/05/do-not-spray-list/#comments Tue, 22 May 2007 05:07:03 +0000 Mike http://polka.esolves.com/2007/05/do-not-spray-list/ Hi,

We are asking everyone (on earth) to support our local food efforts.

To do this, please observe our Do Not Spray map (this is version 1.0).

This point corresponds to the location of the Loquat trees in the green space in Ocean Beach.

To see a picture of our Loquat tree friends, see the post immediately below.

A friend in the neighborhood http://polka.esolves.com/2007/05/a-friend-in-the-neighborhood/ http://polka.esolves.com/2007/05/a-friend-in-the-neighborhood/#comments Tue, 15 May 2007 22:15:30 +0000 Mike http://polka.esolves.com/2007/05/a-friend-in-the-neighborhood/ We have been relying more on our natural resources to get our food, since the prices skyrocketed in a WorldWithoutOil.

We have found many friends in our journey, this is the most recent, our friend(s) the Loquat trees on the corner.

    loquat_tree.JPG

They are ripe right now, but won’t be around for long.

Some are starting to crinkle.  We’ve collected some for today.  Will check back soon to make sure they are all getting used.  Loquat jam is a favorite in our family.

To get there, we walk towards town and towards the beach from our home.  Luckily, this is very near a small plot we planted last week with tomatoes….we’ll be checking this spot frequently.

Mission Accomplished: OB seed planting http://polka.esolves.com/2007/05/mission-accomplished-3-plantings-complete/ http://polka.esolves.com/2007/05/mission-accomplished-3-plantings-complete/#comments Fri, 11 May 2007 04:13:20 +0000 Mike http://polka.esolves.com/2007/05/mission-accomplished-3-plantings-complete/ The mission:  Use our existing resources, seeds to find existing yards and open spaces that have good soil, sun, and water within blocks of our home.

Onward!

The Mission Begins

Walking down the street from our home in Ocean Beach, we find our first spot that meets our requirements.

It has lot’s of sun, good water….

A place for Corn, in the neighbors yard.

The nice neighbors with the great palms in their yard..   Let’s drop in the corn seeds.

Drop the seeds in the hole

Let’s try not to get caught.

Barbara comes out the front door.Burt PondersBurt smiles

Don’t look over in the corner of the yard….nothing going on over there…

Spencer explains the situation

Now we have our seeds in the ground, the neighbors in partnership….now we need some water.

A little creative thinking in action.  Sneaking some extra water from the running hose to fill up the bucket.

Anca provisions water from running hose.

We’re lucky to have good friends and neighbors, in a WorldWithoutOil.

Hope our seeds sprout!

Find a Sneaky Spot to Sprout http://polka.esolves.com/2007/05/find-a-sneaky-spot-to-sprout/ http://polka.esolves.com/2007/05/find-a-sneaky-spot-to-sprout/#comments Thu, 10 May 2007 06:12:20 +0000 Mike http://polka.esolves.com/2007/05/find-a-sneaky-spot-to-sprout/ mission.JPG

Mission.  Find a spot in a yard, alley, public space within blocks (1/4 mile) of your home.

Suggested Steps

  • Inventory location options (places where water available, good sun, low foot traffic)
  • Acquire seeds of varieties that will do good for the time of year and conditions
  • Find spot with ample water and light (near sprinkler)
  • Mulch in some new soil (bring your own)
  • Hide the evidence
  • Come back and guide the new sprouts through growth
  • Harvest

Note:  Be free….plant a few extra, if you get more sprouts than you can support, move to another spot.

Without Oil, Food Evaporates.

Now that Oil is prioritized for other activities… Keeping up with the demand for healthy food is harder than ever. Although our supplies are weakening, we see hope and have taken up alternate means to survive. Being in near perfect weather, with lots of plants growing, we started our garden.

melon_sprout.JPG

Although it is thriving, it is not fully operational. Will report more news on our garden soon. We have started exploring the blocks around our home, looking for edible plants. Seen a lot of different fruits before, but never seen one of these. Looks like some sort of fig Smells like pumpkin, we’re assuming it’s edible…

tastes great?

We’ll archive some spots in our neighborhood to eat for free, in the alleys and in the streets there may be enough to keep us going.

Learn more about the game, WorldWithoutOil.
